CURE Extraordinary Healer Art Competition

The purpose of the CURE Extraordinary Healer Art Competition is to recognize and showcase art that demonstrates the compassion, expertise, and helpfulness that a special oncology nurse has exhibited during one’s cancer journey. Each entrant should create a piece of art through photographs, illustrations, mixed media, sculptures, and other works. For judging purposes, each submission must include a high-quality slide or digital image (300 ppi jpg; approximate size: 8 inches by 10 inches) of your work, the title of the piece, a caption describing the piece in relation to your experience with a special oncology nurse in no more than 75 words, and your full contact information (name, address, telephone number, and e-mail [if available]). Entries without required information will be ineligible for the competition. Please do not send original artwork.

A selection of art pieces will appear in a CURE publication and be exhibited at the 2008 Extraordinary Healer Award reception during the Oncology Nursing Society’s 33rd Annual Congress in Philadelphia. The winner will receive round-trip airfare for two from a major airport in the continental United States and two-night accommodations for themselves and one guest to attend the aforementioned reception, where their art will be displayed.

All artwork and narratives must be original, created solely by the applicant, and never previously displayed or published. A panel of independent judges will be asked to judge all art entries and finalists will be selected on or about April 16. Judgment will be made on the basis of how the piece best portrays the inspirational and exceptional qualities of an oncology nurse, including compassion, expertise, helpfulness, and insight as well as originality and creativity of the piece. Additionally, judges will take into account how well the short narrative that accompanies the piece illustrates the relationship between the artist, his/her piece, and the nurse. The decision of the judges is final.

A selection of art pieces may be published in a 2008 issue of CURE, Heal, CURExtra, www.curetoday.com, www.healtoday.com, and related products in any media, in addition to any CURE Media Group exhibitions, whether now known or thereafter devised, without compensation. By participating in the CURE Extraordinary Healer Art Competition as a finalist, you will be asked to send us your original artwork and transfer all rights to CURE Media. Artwork will not be returned.

Contest is open to current and former patients with a history of cancer and their caregivers. Employees of CURE Media Group, Medical Media Holdings, its sponsors, advertising/public relations agencies, and members of their immediate families and households are not eligible. If applicant’s artwork is selected for exhibition or publication, only the applicant’s first name, country of habitation, and artwork title will be revealed, along with the accompanying narrative, unless additional consent is obtained.

Finalists will be notified by phone or e-mail and will be required to complete an Affidavit of Eligibility and Liability/Publicity/Materials Release, which must be returned within three business days of receipt of the notification letter or alternate winners will be selected. Finalists under the age of 18 must have the written consent of their parent or legal guardian. Finalists shall agree in writing that CURE Media Group and anyone they may authorize may, without compensation, use finalist’s name, photograph or other likeness, biographical information, and statements concerning the contest or the sponsors, and art for purposes of advertising and promotion without compensation.
