Have we done enough in cancer research?

ELIZABETH WHITTINGTON

So, are you happy with where we are in cancer research? Think we're close to a cure yet? If not, then you should be disappointed that $1.6 billion is on the chopping block for the National Institutes of Heath, and subsequently $300 million for the National Cancer Institute.

Our Favorite Finance & Legal Resources

The Cancer Legal Resource Center provides information on cancer-related legal issues for cancer survivors, their families, and others impacted by the disease.

The Patient Advocate Foundation provides education, legal counseling, and referrals to cancer patients and survivors concerning managed care, insurance, financial issues, job discrimination, and debt crisis matters.

During times of financial instability and economic distress, the financial burden of medical costs can weigh heavily on cancer patients. In response to these financial challenges, the Cancer Financial Assistance Coalition recently launched www.cancerfac.org to provide guidance on financial assistance and local resources for patients, caregivers, and health care professionals.

On the site, patients can search by ZIP code, cancer type, and the type of care they’re looking for—housing, health insurance, drug assistance, transportation, scholarships—and instantly receive customized information.

Formed in 2007, the CFAC is made up of 12 national organizations, including the American Cancer Society and CancerCare.
