Diet

I need help with diet. I had a colon tumor removed along with part of my intestines about a year ago followed by chemo. I am a Stage II survivor with the latest tests being negative. So far so good. What I have problems with is gas and occassional diarhea. I've been using probiotics and enzymes which seems to have helped somewhat. I have been watching my diet. I have turned to a mostly vegan diet. While the diarhea seems to have slowed, the gas continues. I am trying different types of probiotics and enzymes as mentioned but there is still a problem. I wonder if I have to be more specific on foods and times of eating. Today someone said I should eat fruits seperately and not with or after a meal. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

RE: Diet

Hi, mp:
I know it's been a while since you posted. Just responding for you and anyone else who may still have this issue.
All herbs in the mint familiy help decrease gas and aid digestion. The best one for this is mint, but oregano, marjoram, and basil are others.

If you cook dried beans, you can avoid a lot of the gas by soaking overnight in water, then cooking in fresh water the following day. I use the 'bean water' for my garden.

Finally, ginger helps decrease gas.
Hope this helps.

RE: Diet

Hi Lisa,
Many thanks for your message. I appreciate the suggestion. I shall try the mint family herbs in my food. I have been eating mostly cooked beans but will try the dried beans in the future. Checked out your website and looks interesting. Also noted your running of which good luck on the upcoming races. Also note you are in the same vicinity that I currently reside (Ft. Lauderdale). I attend a Cancer Ministry monthly meeting at my Church (St. Anthony's) www.saintanthonyfl.org which meets the 3rd Wednesday of the month at 7 PM for about an hour. We are always looking for speakers to make recommendations or suggestions. It is a new Ministry and averages about a dozen attendees but think it will grow. If you are interested to just join or contribute, please contact Rose Young <rosey29@att.net> or just show-up. I think there is a dietician who will attend either in the Jan or Feb meeting. In the meantime, I can use all the help I can get. As a single guy I haven't been the best cook in the world. Hopefully in time. Thanks again!
