Did you make any lifestyle changes?

Studies from SABCS have shown that various lifestyle choices (like obesity and alcohol consumption) can be risk factors for breast cancer diagnosis and recurrence. Did you make any lifestyle changes because of your cancer diagnosis?

RE: Did you make any lifestyle changes?

Yes, quite definitely. When I was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer, I did a lot of reading and found that a low-fat diet would likely help to prevent recurrence. I went on a low-fat diet and eliminated sugar. I also eat mostly organic fruits and vegetables and whole grains. I eat wild salmon weekly. I eat very little meat or chicken, but if I do it is meat without antibiotics or hormones. I drink 64 oz. of water per day. I lost 33 pounds in five months at the same time I was undergoing chemotherapy. I also continued to walk for a half hour daily. My doctor found it hard to watch me lose weight, but I kept explaining to her how I was eating. She finally said, "Oh, you're one of those patients who does everything right." I'm not sure I do everything right, but I said, "You are taking care of my medicine, and this gives me the feeling that I can do something. too." This hasn't prevented side effects from chemo or surgery, but in spite of losing my hair and undergoing a mastectomy, I feel pretty good about how I look and how I'm contributing to my longterm wellness.

Hope, I completely agree with you. We have a lot in common. Except I notice that I am not so good at refusing sugar now that I am 3 years out. Really want to get back on track this year, though!
