I did not have the dreaded reaction described by many to the call from my urologist telling me I had advanced prostate cancer. Perhaps that was because I suspected that would be the result. I found it very useful to use my scientific training to learn everything I could about the disease and my treatment options. That put me in a very good position to discuss treatment as a patient rather than a victim. I also found it beneficial to journal my treatment and to share the experiences with friends and family. This seemed to help me look at treatment as an experience rather than an ordeal, even during the times that treatment complications made life difficult. It has now been exactly seven year since treatment. I provide this information as a suggestion to others that, particularly with improving treatments and better outcomes, you can look at cancer as just another obstacle in life to overcome rather than a death sentence.
