Bilateral Mastectomy, along with surgical removal of fallopian tubes and ovaries, is essential to long term survival for women with a deleterious BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation. I would like to be able to argue both sides, on this, I am unable to do so. Long before signs of ovarian cancer can be detected, it most likely will have spread, advanced, be past the stage where treatment is a viable option. When the BRCA mutation is present, bilateral mastectomy is a wise choice. In my opinion, if the fallopian tubes, the ovaries, if removal of these are not seriously considered, the woman does herself a dis-service. Sounds draconian, I know.
