I am a retired family phyiscian with a history of 2 breast cancers 10 years apart. A friend with stage IV breast cancer had chemotherapy of many types over an 8 year period, and I observed how the numbness in hands and feet affected her daily activities. I had no problem with chemo or Arimidex with my first cancer, but when I was given Taxotere with my second cancer I started developing a disturbing discomfort in both hands and feet after my second dose, and I stopped therapy. On Being a Rebel and Going Against Medical Advice

Congratulations on taking care of yourself! Especially now that oncologists are pushing anti-estrogen therapy for 10 years periods. That is too long to be miserable. I talked with a woman today who looked more alive than when I last saw her 6 months ago. She had had a heart attack without a major blockage to her arteries, probably due to increased coagulation on her AI. She told her oncologist she wanted to stop it, and in this case he agreed. Why can't they see the need when mood, memory and musculoskeletal systems are so disabling? I don't know. Tamoxifen and AI are not 100% answers to the possiblility of recurrence. Sleeplessness, depression probably counter any benefit. Be healthy, be happy,

Great essay with huge truth! I would suggest featuring this article every year, but not posting it in the week before Christmas, but sometime in mid-November when the anxieties about doing enough, being enough, having enough, giving enough start for many women of many faiths. Questioning all the "shoulds" that go along with tradition is key. Strong relationships, togetherness, and peace should be our goals while we honor ourselves and our needs as survivors.

Unhappy During Pink October

I've had 2 different breast cancers, and I too am tired of awareness messages and all the companies making profits off the color pink in October. The one organization that is working to find out the causes of cancer, ways to detect it earlier, understanding the different behaviors of tumors in different age and ethnic groups is the Doctor Susan Love Research Foundation. They need women 18 and older, with or without a history of breast cancer to participate in research projects that are not drug trials, usually simple, often can do from home (questionnaires, cheek swabs or saliva).
