I was immeasurably helped by my participation in a clinical trial. I was diagnosed with stage IV esophageal cancer and sent biopsy off for genomic testing and requested biomarker testing at the cancer center. The biomarkers (DNA mismatch repair, microsatellite instability high) suggested that pembrolizumab (Keytruda) coulld be beneficial but it was not yet approved for esophageal cancer. I worked hard to get into a trial using pembro. After my second cycle the scan looked normal or nearly normal and after the 4th cycle the cancer has remained below limits of detection! For the past year plus there has been no detectable cancer! That after a diagnosis that suggested that I had less than 6 months!
