I had precisely the same experience as you - lost a lot of weight, doctor saw a lump in my neck, and I had to have a biopsy. The needle didn't hurt much at all and I think it's less of a freak out if you don't look at anything while it's happening (it's hard to see anyway because you have to usually raise your chin). The size of the needle and seeing it happen is more worrying than the actual feeling of it going into your neck. I didn't watch, but my husband was in the room and found it disconcerting to see someone put a long needle in my neck. Mine ended up being a benign tumor (calcification, I think) and they removed half of my thyroid. The other half is still functioning perfectly fine and I don't have to take medication or anything. I can't say what your situation is likely to be, but thyroid tumors aren't uncommon and, even when it is cancer, it's one of the most treatable forms with the best outcomes. One of my friends had thyroid cancer and it was a pretty lightweight experience as cancer treatment goes. Good luck, and, though it's difficult, try not to be afraid. It's not fun, but it's not terrible. short life free
