In 2009, Teri Griege was in the best shape of her life. In fact, the 48-year-old just completed an Ironman — a grueling race consisting of a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike and 26.2-mile run. So, she was completely shocked when, two weeks after her race, she was diagnosed with stage 4 colorectal cancer.

Griege said that competing in triathlons was really a four-discipline sport: running, biking, swimming and — importantly — mindset. After receiving her diagnosis, she took that attitude into her cancer treatment, only now instead of participating in a run, bike and swim, it would be radiation, chemotherapy and surgery.

“Initially when I went into (cancer treatment), the radiation was one sport, the chemotherapy was a second sport and the surgery was a third sport. So you get through one and you move on to the next,” Griege said in an interview with CURE®. “Even within one, you still have to break that down… when you start a marathon, you don’t want to think about mile 26. You’re going to think about getting through mile number one… so I just went with the same kind of game plan (for cancer treatment) as I would for a competition.”

In this episode of the Cancer Horizons podcast, Greige shares her story, including how she became an “accident advocate” for patients with colorectal cancer — including her sister, who was diagnosed with the disease only two weeks after she was.

“I saved my sister’s life right out of the gate,” Griege said. “So I feel like advocacy has been my calling.”

For patients like Phuong Gallagher, who represents one of the many faces behind the statistics of early-onset colorectal cancer, so many questions remain unanswered. “I got a lot of the ‘I feel sorry for you’ looks and treatment, because (other patients) were all much older and established in their lives,” Gallagher said during an interview with CURE®. “And they all felt like they had the chance to live their lives, but it's so unfair for somebody at 29 to get it. And that just didn't sit right with me. I'm not one for people to just feel sorry for me, it's more of ‘Let's go after this thing and fight it.’”

In Sickness and in Health: When Both Partners Have Cancer

Colorectal cancers (CRCs) are the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the U.S. among men and women combined, but experts say that up to 60% of CRCs could be prevented with screening. To kick off Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month this March, this week’s episode of the “

 Talks Cancer” podcast features April Schack, a colorectal cancer survivor and ambassador for Fight Colorectal Cancer, or Fight CRC.

This month, the organization is launching a new awareness campaign, called “No Excuses,” in Times Square in New York City, to rally awareness for the disease and encourage individuals to get screened as soon as possible. Schack, who is serving as a 2021 Fight CRC Ambassador, spoke with 

 to discuss what it was like to be diagnosed with colon cancer at age 37, and how she found a community of fellow patients and other advocates with Fight CRC.

“I think people are scared to talk about it,” Schack said in an interview. “And so, it (the campaign) is showing us, you know, we're a group of people who've been through it, and it's not something you should be scared to talk about.”

“I've shared my story with family and friends, and I've gotten so many people who messaged me and said, ‘You know, I had these symptoms and I went and scheduled my colonoscopy because of you.’ And if I can do even just that little bit to get someone to get screened and save their lives, that's amazing.”

This week on the “CURE® Talks Cancer” podcast, to kick off Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, we spoke with colon cancer survivor April Schack about what it was like to be diagnosed at age 36 and how she’s working with Fight CRC on a new campaign that aims to raise awareness about the disease, so that no one has to go through what she did. 

‘No Excuses’ When It Comes to Colorectal Cancer Awareness

At the age of 45, Dr. Angela Nicholas’s husband was diagnosed with stage 4 colorectal cancer. Just five years later, he passed from the disease.

As an advocate, Nicholas works to raise awareness around earlier screening for the disease, as well as alternative options for screening.

For example, findings from a new colorectal cancer screening study found consistently high adherence (71%) with an at-home, stool-based, multi-target DNA test among Medicare beneficiaries, an above-average adherence rate compared to other screening tools.

Screening for Colorectal Cancer

While most think colorectal cancer is a disease that occurs in older adults, it is in fact increasingly being diagnosed in young adults. In fact, 11% and 18% of colon and rectal cancer diagnoses, respectively, occur in those under 50.

While research has not yet identified why this increase is occurring, there is still a clear need to raise more awareness around the topic. In particular, educating young adults, as well as primary care physicians, on the rise in early-age onset colorectal cancer occurrence, is a way to start the conversation.

“(A young adult facing a colorectal cancer diagnosis) is not alone,” Stadler said. “They are not alone as patients. They are not alone in the field that is trying to study this.”

Cancer Taught Me that Family Matters Most

When Yla Flores began chemotherapy for colorectal cancer during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, she didn’t know what to expect from the experience.

Her physical reaction to the first few treatments was difficult, but what she did not foresee was the emotional impact she’d feel after seeing other patients with cancer undergoing treatments alongside her.

“(Chemotherapy was given in) just a big giant room, and in this room, they have all these chairs and they spaced them probably like six feet apart,” Flores said during an interview with CURE®. “Probably prior to COVID-19, maybe they were spaced a little closer, but (they were) about six feet apart. So, you can see people from across the room and everybody is having some kind of treatment, somehow or another.”

As she watched the other patients undergoing treatment, her heart was struck by seeing people in worse conditions or who were very young. When her friend picked her up from treatment, Flores said she broke down crying.

“I think (my friend) thought that … I was crying from the chemo — like (that) I was crying for myself,” she said. “But, after I was able to compose myself after, I don't know, 10 or 15 minutes of just letting it out, I was able to tell her, ‘Hey, listen, I'm not even crying for myself. I'm fine. I'm OK. You know, it's just seeing what I've seen today, just people who are really in dire straits, and how bad this is.’”

The first treatment was horrible — the first couple of treatments. They ended up adjusting some of the anti-nausea medication and some of the things. It was just, you know, I think your body's just in shock. You really don't know what to expect, they can verbally say to you, “Hey, you know, this is what could happen, or these could be your side effects and everything.” But until you're fully experienced those things you really don't know until you're literally in those shoes. So I wish I would have had a little bit of heads up because maybe it would have eased my first couple of chemo treatments, just knowing what I could preventively do to just make them maybe a little better for me.

The staff was great. They had us — it's interesting, it's like this whole room, you know, it's like just a big giant room, and in this room, they have all these chairs and they spaced them probably like six feet apart. Probably prior to COVID-19, maybe they were spaced a little closer, but (they were) about six feet apart. So you can see people from across the room and everybody is having some kind of treatment, somehow or another.

It's just, you know, you see everything. There are people I think probably like myself, that you would see on the street and you wouldn’t say, “Oh, that's a cancer patient. Yep, she's going through chemo.” Like I was probably one of those, nobody would probably have known that. And then you see the ones that are very frail, that are just very sick. You see different age groups. I think that for me, personally, was very hard, emotionally.

(For) my first chemo treatment, my friend dropped me off, my friend Jennifer. And she lives adjacent to the hospital – very close to it. So she dropped me off and I come out, and I'm literally just bawling. I'm crying and I'm crying. I get in the car, and I'm crying and crying. And she doesn't know what to do, because she's never really seen me like that. You know, people get to see a different side of you. So I'm just bawling. I get in the car and she just doesn't know how to comfort me. She doesn't know what to say, she's like, “It's OK, It's OK.” I think she thought that like literally I was crying from the chemo — like (that) I was crying for myself. But literally, after I was able to compose myself after, I don't know, 10 or 15 minutes of just letting it out, I was able to tell her, “Hey, listen, I'm not even crying for myself. I'm fine. I'm OK. You know, it's just seeing what I've seen today, just people who are really in dire streets, and how bad this is.”

And some of the things that I overheard — you overhear a lot of people like chattering, the patients and just everything and it was an eye opener. I've never been involved in anything like this. I've never accompanied somebody to chemo treatment — doctor's appointments, of course, all-day-long, surgeries, yes — but nothing quite like this. So this was really a bit of a shock, not just to my personal system, but also to my heart to what I literally saw in there, so.

After not knowing quite what to expect from her first chemotherapy treatment, colorectal cancer survivor Yla Flores describes the pain she felt in her heart after seeing other patients in worse conditions.

‘Shock to the Heart’: A Cancer Survivor Recalls the Emotions of Her First Chemo Treatment

When patients enroll in clinical trials and undergo genomic testing, – which analyzes DNA sequences in tumors – it helps progress research for their disease, says an expert from The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.

“There are already genomic markers that are linked to FDA approvals beyond histology, so in the tumor agnostic fashion,” said Dr. Funda Meric-Bernstam, Chair of the Department of Investigational Cancer Therapeutics at MD Anderson Cancer Center, in an interview with CURE®. “So that alone, I think, is a reason to think if a patient (is) interested in molecularly selected therapy or clinical trials, it's worth pursuing molecular testing in that front.”

Meric-Bernstam recently presented findings from the MyPathway HER2 basket study at the 2021 American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Annual Meeting, showing that Perjeta (pertuzumab) plus Herceptin (trastuzumab) was active in a wide variety of KRAS wild-type, HER2-amplified/overexpressed advanced solid tumor types. The data, according to the presentation, suggests that HER2-targeted therapy may be useful in KRAS wild-type tumors.

According to an expert from The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, patient enrollment in clinical trials that involve genomic testing are important in progressing research in their cancer types.
