A Look Back On Our Training Hike

July 27, 2022

As we approach our Sole 2 Soul hike in Waterton, I reflect on all that has occurred in my life since my MPN diagnosis. When I was diagnosed in 2013, at the age of 52, I had convinced myself that I would not see 60 but here I am at 61 preparing to go on three-day hike in Waterton National Park as part of the Sole 2 Soul hike to raise funds for MPN research and hopefully a cure. For this, I am extremely grateful. I am not only grateful that my health allows me to participate in the Sole 2 Soul trek but also for this new MPN family that I have found as a result of this opportunity.

One cannot explain the emotions that were felt at the training hike. As we sat around the table the first night in Colorado, each one of us introduced ourselves and talked about our connection to MPNs. Each person’s story intrigued me. Whether we are affiliated through personal affliction, family connection, medical profession, research or friendship, we all felt an instant connection. I was surprised at how long I spoke about myself but the words flowed. These people got me! I could sense their interest in what I had to say, just as I was intrigued in their stories.

The next morning we gathered at 6 a.m. for breakfast and also to make our lunches and snacks to take with us on our adventure. We gathered in the vans with our guides to get to the trailhead to begin our 10-mile trek. We would be hiking five miles up to an altitude of over 10,000 feet and then return five miles. I must say that I was a little intimidated by the altitude that we would reach. I had been at these altitudes before and could barely stay awake.

We walked through some beautiful country passing rushing waterfalls, through the forest, above the tree line, hiked over snow and ultimately to beautiful alpine lake. We not only connected with nature but also with each other. There were numerous stops to take in the scenery and regroup as some of us are naturally faster on the trails and in better physical condition than others (no comment). Our guides were amazing and prevented us from becoming too distanced from each other. Even though I was most concerned about the uphill, it was the downhill that caused me the most grief. I developed quite severe pain behind one knee for approximately the last mile. Thank goodness for hiking poles which I had never used before but will never again attempt a long hike without them.

Once back in the room, my roomie and new friend Debby, gave me some ibuprofen and brought me a bag of ice. Both helped tremendously and I was good within a couple of hours.

I am excited to all gather again in Waterton and to hit the trails. I look forward to meeting a few others who were not able to attend the training hike. I am sure that they will feel the instant connection with the group that I did.

It is a privilege to participate in the Sole 2 Soul trek and to raise money for MPN causes and research. I recognize that I am fortunate to be healthy enough to participate in this and I will be hiking for all patients with MPNs.

I also thank all of those who have so generously donated to support me. I am overwhelmed with the support that I have received.
