We Moved Mountains and Are Stronger Together

August 22, 2021

Discovering Alaska for the first time was incredible. And, trekking through the wilderness with fellow myeloma survivors and advocates made it a life changing experience. Three years out from my diagnosis, I consider myself so very fortunate to be physically able to meet the challenges this awe-inspiring region requires.

After COVID-19 delays, the time was finally here for us to meet face to face. There was an immediate connection with every member on our team knowing we shared the same passion and purpose. Hiking in the outdoors up mountain ranges, aside glaciers, expansive lakes and through lush green rainforest was a far cry from our familiar routines of spending hours and hours in doctor offices and medical treatment facilities.
Each of us were stepping outside of our comfort zone. We leaned on each other for assistance to navigate boulders and steep inclines. When an increase in elevation or sudden climate change presented physical limitations, a friendly hand of support and encouragement was close by. Every member had your back.

Admittedly, we made this adventure with the backing of our friends and family at home who believed in us and our mission, enough to offer unwavering support both monetarily and with prayers. While every day was meticulously planned and executed, we were confronted with some serendipitous moments. It seemed each day we had unexplained coincidences that we all felt must be attributed to some divine intervention by a higher power. Reaffirming that our time spent together was meant to be.

I prepared physically for this exciting adventure and focused on making sure I had the necessary items ready and packed. Little did I know, sharing in the joy of discovery of Alaska with amazing people fueled my soul and provided an inner strength that will last a lifetime. I am truly grateful to the MMRF, CURE and Sanofi for sponsoring this epic adventure on our behalf. We moved mountains for multiple myeloma and we are stronger together!
