As a cancer survivor, I’ve found three impactful ways to get involved in Mesothelioma Awareness Day to help make a difference.
Mesothelioma Awareness Day on September 26 symbolizes hope: a time when we come together to shine a light on a rare and devastating cancer! The Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation instituted it in 2004. Congress first declared September 26 as National Mesothelioma Awareness Day in 2010. As a 17-year-and-counting peritoneal mesothelioma survivor myself, I know firsthand the importance of raising awareness and supporting those who are facing this disease.
Mesothelioma is a rare and aggressive cancer primarily caused by exposure to asbestos, according to the American Cancer Society. It's estimated that 2,500 to 3,000 people in the United States die annually from mesothelioma. Increasing awareness about mesothelioma helps raise funds for research and improves clinical trial participation, which is low compared to more familiar cancers like breast and prostate cancers.
One of the most powerful things you can do is to educate yourself about mesothelioma. Understanding this cancer's causes, symptoms and treatments can equip you with valuable knowledge and enable you to share accurate information with others. By hosting a small gathering or organizing a virtual meeting to discuss your learning, you are not just spreading knowledge but also dispelling myths. Share articles, personal stories and resources on your social media platforms. By sharing personal stories, you can help others connect and empathize with those silently struggling.
Many organizations host fundraising events specifically for Mesothelioma Awareness Day. These events range from charity runs and walks to online fundraisers and auctions. Participate in a local event or create your fundraiser. Every dollar raised can contribute to research, patient support and advocacy efforts. Your contributions can offer that same sense of hope and support to others.
Social media is a powerful tool that can amplify our voices far and wide. On Mesothelioma Awareness Day, join the conversation using hashtags like #MesotheliomaAwarenessDay and #EndMesothelioma. Share stories of warriors who have battled this disease, post infographics with facts about mesothelioma, or express your support for the cause. Your posts can inspire others to learn more and act. Let your voice be a beacon of hope and resilience, just as I strive to be through my journey.
Participating in Mesothelioma Awareness Day is more than just an act of solidarity; it's a commitment to fostering a community of support and hope. You can make a significant impact by educating yourself and others, contributing financially, and using your voice on social media. Together, we can light the way for those affected by mesothelioma and move closer to a world where no one must face this battle alone!
