New York Yankees Player Gifts Custom Baseball Cards to Cancer Survivor, 'Good Morning America' Host Robin Roberts Discusses Hair Loss During Cancer Treatment and More

From New York Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge giving a brain cancer survivor custom baseball cards to Tom Parker’s brain cancer death and Good Morning America’s Robin Roberts opening up about her cancer experience, here’s what is happening in the cancer space this week.

New York Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge gifts a cancer survivor a set of custom baseball cards.

Over the past year, Judge, who plays rightfield for the Yankees, formed a relationship with Mason Ferrulli, a young man and three-time survivor of ependymoma, type of cancer that can form in the brain or spinal cord. Judge video chatted with Ferrulli and told him to open the package that was sent to him. In it was a set of custom baseball cards featuring photos of when the two met a year earlier.

“Oh man, that’s awesome!” Ferrulli said when he opened the cards.

“That’s your card, my man,” Judge responded. “You’re a hero to me, and you’re a hero to so many others.”

“Good Morning America” host Robin Roberts discusses “losing her crown” during cancer treatment.

Roberts, now aged 61, received a diagnosis of breast cancer in 2007 and subsequently underwent chemotherapy treatments. As a result, she lost her hair — something she recently discussed with Apple Fitness+.

“Hair is a daily conversation for women … especially for women of color. We love to talk about our hair and part of going through the treatment for cancer was knowing I was going to lose my hair, my crown!” Roberts said.

Throughout treatments, Roberts continued to co-host “Good Morning America” while wearing a wig, until one day she wanted to show her authentic self and made the decision to take the wig off, similar to the recent Jeopardy! Champion Christine Whelchel, who also ditched her wig in the middle of a winning streak on the popular game show.

“The Wanted” singer, Tom Parker, dies of brain cancer.

Tom Parker, the 33-year-old singer of the popular British boy-band “The Wanted” died this week after receiving a diagnosis of brain cancer in 2020, his wife, Kelsey Hardwick, reported on Instagram.

"Tom was the centre of our world. We can't imagine life without his infectious smile and energetic presence,” she said. “We are truly thankful for the outpouring of love and support and ask that we all unite to ensure Tom's light continues to shine for his beautiful children.”

His bandmates also said that they were “devasted” by Parker’s death and were by his side when he died. The music group is known for their popular hits including “Glad You Came” and “All Time Low.”

“Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” star Teddi Mellencamp receives melanoma in situ diagnosis.

In March, the 40-year-old reality TV star shared on Instagram that she was having a mole removed after her friend and fellow reality show star Kyle Richards encouraged her to see a dermatologist.

This week, Mellencamp gave an update on what the clinicians found.

“Got my results back and it’s good news: melanoma in situ, which means the cancer cells were contained in that area of my skin and have not spread any deeper!” She also said that she will undergo check-ups with her dermatologist every three months and will always wear sunscreen.

Mellencamp encouraged others to take good care of their skin, too.

“Our skin is something a lot of us take for granted, but not me anymore — and I hope not you either,” she wrote on Instagram.
