An Extraordinary Healer essay honoring JENNIFER HOLTON, B.S.N., RN, OCN [TEXAS ONCOLOGY — PLANO WEST, PLANO, TEXAS]

It is with great pleasure that I write on behalf of Jennifer Holton. Jennifer works with Manish Gupta, M.D., at Texas Oncology in Plano, Texas. As my oncology nurse, Jennifer has consistently demonstrated a rare blend of compassion and expertise.

Over the past 18 months and 36 chemotherapy treatments, Jennifer has been available to assist me. She has taken the time to explain every treatment and diagnosis, as well as what to watch for and what I can expect. Jennifer has prepared me as much as I could be prepared for the battle I have taken on. My journey has been long and difficult, but Jennifer encourages me and helps keep me positive with her cheerful demeanor. She told me early on that we would be a team, and she has proven this in her care and her actions.

Throughout this journey, there are so many questions that arise, and I can count on Jennifer to confidently answer my concerns and guide me. On one occasion, after several chemotherapy treatments, I developed painful mouth sores. I phoned Jennifer, and she had me come in as soon as I could. She immediately examined me upon arrival and even walked me to the pharmacy to pick up my prescription, explaining what I needed to do to minimize the pain and progression of the side effect. This helped me greatly and cut down on the time I had to deal with the painful mouth sores. This is just one example of the many times Jennifer has been my angel of mercy. I am confident that however long my journey will be, Jennifer will be there with me to offer support, encouragement and guidance.

Jennifer Holton, RN, is truly one in a million. With Jennifer, being a nurse is not a career — it is a vocation. She is a shining star in oncology nursing.
