Kevin B. Kim, of the California Pacific Medical Center, explains how patients with melanoma who are in remission can get back into a normal, daily routine while still taking precautions.

"Don't be afraid to do things you want to do because of fear," he says. " You don't have to stay indoors all the time. You can still go out, but make sure you have the sunscreen lotions on for at least every two hours."

He also encourages wearing the right clothing, including hats, limiting sun exposure, exercising and eating a balanced diet.

"Watch for any new lumps in the skin," he says. If a patient does notice any skin changes, they should contact their physician or dermatologist.
