Plainsboro, NJ (PRWEB) June 25, 2015 -- CURE® Magazine and the Foundation for Women’s Cancer have teamed up in CURE’s Advocacy Spotlight Partnership program to battle women’s cancer through education and shared advocacy on behalf of women suffering from below-the-belt women’s cancers.

“The Society of Gynecologic Oncology’s Foundation for Women’s Cancer is dedicated to increasing public awareness of gynecologic cancer risk, prevention, early detection and optimal treatment, and we are pleased to be able to bring CURE’s resources to bear in this important effort,” said Mike Hennessy Jr., president of Intellisphere Oncology and Healthcare Specialty Group, part of the Plainsboro, N.J.-based Michael J. Hennessy Associates, Inc. (MJH) family of businesses. “At CURE we strive to educate and support cancer patients and their loved ones on their journey in battling cancer. By joining forces with the Foundation for Women’s Cancer, we will broaden our reach and impact in the fight against the many forms of cancer that affect women.”

“Since being established and charged in 1991 by the Society of Gynecologic Oncology, the Foundation for Women’s Cancer has worked steadfastly to aid women diagnosed with a gynecologic cancer and to support their families through educational materials and courses held in 27 states across the country,” said Dr. David G. Mutch, chairman of the Foundation Board of Directors. “In addition, our research program portfolio continues to populate the next generation of clinician-scientists, and our awareness campaign has greatly expanded as more knowledge and insight has been gained about gynecologic cancer risks, prevention strategies and symptoms.”

“We welcome the opportunity to work with CURE to align and enhance our efforts to help women with gynecologic cancers. CURE’s digital and print publications, live meetings, resource guide, books and online tools will be important ways to share information in the cancer community,” Dr. Mutch added.

“The Foundation for Women’s Cancer serves a critical role in the Society of Gynecologic Oncology by providing not only evidence-based information to women about the risks, prevention, early detection and optimal treatments of gynecologic cancers, but also stewardship over a research portfolio aimed at moving the needle on disease biology and outcomes for our patients,” said Dr. Robert Coleman, president of the SGO.

“Educating women and their loved ones about the symptoms of women’s cancer and encouraging them to get regular checkups, report all unusual symptoms that persist for more than two weeks and seek care from a gynecologic oncologist — specialists with an additional seven years of training – is critically important to achieve the best outcomes,” he said.

About 98,000 women will be diagnosed with a gynecologic cancer this year — another mother, daughter, sister, friend or colleague every five minutes, he said. Too many are diagnosed in the late stages, and nearly a third will die. Far too few women – or men – know how to recognize the symptoms of these cancers and where to turn for the best treatment and outcomes. Risks rise with age, weight and other factors.
