Oncology Nurse Works an Extra 58 Shifts in 1 Year

Sharon Dix embodies the true spirit of compassion and dedication in her oncology department. She goes above and beyond for her patients, demonstrating expertise and care at every turn. Many of her selfless acts go unnoticed, as she never seeks attention for herself.

One experience shared by a colleague encapsulates Dix's dedication. While working full time in an outpatient oncology clinic, Dix also picks up extra shifts on the inpatient unit. In one instance, a patient was reluctant to undergo surgery. His hesitance persisted until he agreed, motivated by Dix's promise to be there when he woke up. She not only picked up the day of his surgery but also worked through the weekend.

Another colleague shared a story from the holiday season. While discussing Christmas plans, Dix mentioned she was hoping an oncology patient would be discharged in time for the holiday. The patient's wife had concerns about transportation and was unable to visit. Dix invited the wife to stay with her, driving her to the hospital before her clinic shift and picking her up afterward — a quiet act of generosity that extended her commitment well beyond the walls of the clinic.

In 2024, Dix picked up 58 open shifts on the inpatient unit while maintaining her full-time status in the outpatient clinic. She pours her heart into delivering exceptional care without seeking recognition. She is a quiet force of compassion, a shining example of excellence without applause — one who leads with her heart and not for the headlines.
