Rare Cancers - Summer 2017

WHAT IS A RARE CANCER? The American Cancer Society (ACS) defines it as fewer than six cases per 100,000 people each year. And, according to the ACS, that means this year there will be an estimated 208,000 new cases of rare cancers in the United States.

Zuniga enjoys mentoring other patients as part of her volunteer work with the Arizona Carcinoid and Neuroendocrine Cancer Foundation. In February, she helped organize a panel discussion with physicians from Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center in Gilbert, Arizona, which was simulcast online so patients anywhere could learn about new treatment options and therapies that are in development.

Patients who live far away from major cancer centers may feel that they are out of treatment options, however, thanks to one advocacy organization that provides transportation, that is not the case.
