Guiding the Journey: The Power of Oncology Patient Navigation at LiveLung Wilmington

HIGH POINT, NC- (April 29, 2026) LiveLung, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting lung cancer patients, survivors, and their care partners, invites the Triad lung cancer community to its monthly educational meeting on Wednesday, May 6 at 12:00 p.m. The meeting, which includes a complimentary lunch, will be held at Courtyard High Point, 1000 Mall Loop Road, High Point, NC 27265.

This month’s featured presentation, “Guiding the Journey: The Power of Oncology Patient Navigation,” will be led by Sharon Gentry, MSN, RN, AOCN, HONN-ONN-CG-Ms. The presentation will highlight how oncology patient navigation helps patients and care partners move through diagnosis, treatment, and survivorship with clearer guidance and fewer barriers.

“Research shows that cancer patients who receive navigation from professional navigators have improved survival, access to advanced care like clinical trials, and services like genetic testing and palliative care.”

Gentry has dedicated more than 45 years to oncology nursing, including the past 25 years focused on patient navigation, and founded North Carolina’s first oncology navigation program, connecting health systems and community resources in Winston-Salem. She holds a bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a master’s degree in nursing education from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. A longtime leader in the field, she has served on the Board of Trustees of the Academy of Oncology Nurse & Patient Navigators (AONN+) since its inception, and served as Program Director (2020–2023) and Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Navigation and Survivorship and CONQUER through 2025.
