For many women facing cancer, having a female oncologist can bring an added sense of support and understanding, according to Dr. Tran Ho, a breast surgical oncologist at El Camino Health, in Mountain View, California.
Patients often feel more comfortable discussing sensitive issues, such as postmenopausal symptoms or emotional challenges, with a provider who shares their perspective. This connection can foster trust and ease difficult conversations, as well as help women feel truly supported throughout every stage of their cancer journey, from diagnosis to treatment.
“I feel lucky to be able to connect with patients in this way. I think it's special, and it has been very helpful for a lot of my patients to be supported [in this way],” Ho emphasized.
To further expand on this topic, she sat down for an interview with CURE. Ho also serves as a fellow of the Society of Surgical Oncology and a member of the American Society of Breast Surgeons.
As a woman in oncology, how has your perspective shaped the way you connect with patients (particularly women) throughout their cancer journey?
Yeah, I think it's very unique, especially as a fellow woman, to be able to understand the concerns, thoughts and emotions that come with a patient's journey. I believe it can be a source of comfort for patients to have a provider who is also a woman, as we can connect on a personal level in that way.
From a symptomatic standpoint, patients sometimes feel more comfortable speaking to a woman about their postmenopausal symptoms, for example, or the emotions they are feeling during treatment. I feel lucky to be able to connect with patients in this way. I think it's special, and it has been very helpful for a lot of my patients to be supported throughout their journey in this manner.
