Why Self Advocacy and Support Matter After a Cancer Diagnosis

Fact checked by: Ryan Scott

A couple shares how self advocacy, preparation and caregiver support shaped their experience navigating liver cancer care.

Paul McKenzie, a liver cancer survivor, and his wife, Emma, sat down with CURE to discuss the critical role of self advocacy, preparation, and caregiver support throughout Paul’s treatment journey. Drawing from their shared experience, Emma offered valuable insight into what it means to navigate complex medical care as both a partner and an advocate.

A central theme of their conversation was the importance of asking questions and staying persistent. Emma emphasized that patients and caregivers must actively engage in their care, even when it feels uncomfortable.

“You have to be your own advocate,” she explained, noting that pushing for tests, results and clear explanations can make a meaningful difference. Although she acknowledged the challenges within the health care system, she stressed that staying informed and organized, including keeping detailed notes and preparing questions ahead of appointments, helped them make the most of limited time with clinicians.

Both Paul and Emma highlighted how medical information can feel overwhelming, particularly when delivered using complex terminology. They encouraged patients to seek clarification until they feel confident in their understanding. Over time, they found that building relationships with clinicians improved communication, with one consultant even ensuring Emma fully understood each discussion before concluding appointments.

The couple also underscored the value of having a second person present during consultations. Processing information during emotionally charged moments can be difficult, and having another set of ears helped them retain important details and reflect afterward.

Emma also spoke candidly about the caregiver experience, emphasizing the importance of self care. Although much of her focus was on supporting Paul, she learned that maintaining her own well-being was essential. “You can’t look after someone else if you don’t look after yourself,” she said, highlighting the need for balance, support systems, and time to recharge.

Together, their story reinforces the power of advocacy, partnership, and resilience in navigating cancer care.
