In order to be their own advocates, patients should know about their disease and their treatment options, explained Marcy Worthington, a patient advocate. Patients must also realize that treatment is not a one-size-fits-all approach, and just because something works for one person, it might not work for someone else.
Worthington was diagnosed with polycythemia vera in 2002, and became a list owner of MPN-NET, the MPN Education Foundation’s online support group. She was also recently honored by CURE as a 2018 MPN Hero.
