Anna Cummings, BSN, RN, of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, manages complex immunotherapy trials while building deep, trusting bonds with her cancer patients.
I am honored to nominate Anna Cummings, OCN, RN, for this award recognizing exceptional oncology nursing. Anna is a clinical trials nurse in the Early Drug Development Program at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, where she has worked since 2020 on some of the most complex early-phase immunotherapy and targeted therapy trials. Her combination of clinical expertise, deep compassion and unwavering helpfulness makes her an indispensable member of our team and a profoundly impactful caregiver for our patients.
Anna's expertise is evident in the way she manages highly complicated studies, including cytokine-stimulating immunotherapy trials that require meticulous coordination of inpatient admissions, safety monitoring and protocol-driven assessments. She consistently volunteers to take on the most challenging protocols and executes them with precision, professionalism and calm. Her ability to anticipate complications, communicate effectively with multidisciplinary teams, and maintain absolute attention to detail ensures that even the most demanding trials run smoothly and safely.
What truly distinguishes Anna, however, is her extraordinary compassion. She forms meaningful, trusting relationships with patients, many of whom face devastating diagnoses and overwhelming emotions. One of our young, frightened and often angry colorectal cancer patients has found in Anna the one person who can reliably defuse her frustration. Through empathetic listening, gentle humor and genuine presence, Anna creates space for this patient to feel heard and supported. It is no surprise that multiple patients refer to her affectionately as "my Anna."
Anna's helpfulness extends far beyond her assigned responsibilities. She began her career as an inpatient nurse on a stepdown unit, caring for some of the sickest patients in the hospital. Even then, she was known for her clinical acumen and her ability to navigate ethically complex situations with maturity and grace. The head of ethics once reached out personally to commend her handling of a sensitive end-of-life case in which a family attempted to revoke a patient's do-not-resuscitate order during a period of altered mental status. Her judgment, compassion and advocacy were exemplary.
Her commitment to growth and excellence is equally inspiring. Anna began her nursing journey with an associate degree in nursing and has steadily advanced her education to become a registered nurse with a bachelor's degree. She is now pursuing her master's degree with plans to continue on to a Ph.D. She is a natural investigator, someone who identifies clinical problems, gathers data and seeks evidence-based solutions. We are currently collaborating on a project examining cytokine release management in T-cell-engaging bispecifics for solid tumors, a reflection of her drive to improve care not only for her own patients but for the field at large.
During a recent period of significant understaffing, Anna once again demonstrated her extraordinary helpfulness and leadership by stepping in to cover the melanoma clinical trials service. Despite the complexity of the portfolio, she quickly immersed herself in the workflow and identified critical gaps in documentation, safety monitoring and regulatory compliance. She revamped multiple processes to ensure alignment with institutional standards and FDA expectations, bringing the service into full adherence with Good Clinical Practice (GCP) standards. Beyond fixing systems, she invested deeply in the people. Anna has been educating the melanoma team on best practices for conducting multiple phases of trials, and she has taken on the training of new hires, including physicians unfamiliar with the intricacies of protocol-driven research. Her ability to elevate an entire service during a challenging time speaks to her expertise, her generosity and her unwavering commitment to patient safety and high-quality research.
Anna embodies the very best of oncology nursing: compassionate, highly skilled, endlessly helpful and deeply committed to advancing patient care. She elevates every team she works with and profoundly impacts every patient she touches. It is with great pride that I nominate her for this award.
