Life After Liver Cancer: A Couple’s Journey of Recovery and Care

Fact checked by: Ryan Scott

Paul, a liver cancer survivor, and his wife Emma share their journey of recovery, caregiving and finding balance in life after major surgeries.

Paul McKenzie, a liver cancer survivor, and his wife, Emma, sat down for an interview with CURE, in which they share their experiences navigating life after major cancer surgeries. Paul, who underwent a Whipple procedure in 2019 followed by a hepatectomy in 2020, described the ongoing challenges he faces with his digestive system, diabetes and recovery from multiple operations.

“I have good and bad days,” he said in the interview. “I’d say I’m probably 80% positive and 20% negative, and I just go off and have a grumble to myself … then I give myself a bit of a kick and say, ‘Look, this is it now, so just make the best of it.’”

Emma then went on to reflect on her role as a caregiver in the early days of Paul’s recovery. She described providing hands-on care, monitoring medications and helping Paul find foods he could tolerate while managing weight loss after the surgeries.

“It was a complete change of life,” she said. “We had to find out what the new normal was.”

Over time, their focus shifted from intensive care to ongoing management, balancing rest, planning activities and pacing Paul’s energy to support his well-being.

The couple also highlighted the emotional and philosophical lessons learned. Paul emphasized appreciating life despite medical setbacks. “Life is precious. Anything can happen, so we make the most of our time while we can within the limits I’ve been dealt.”

Emma described how she encourages him to take care of himself, comparing his daily medications to an “Iron Man” device that keeps him alive.

Through candid reflection, Paul and Emma shared not only the practical realities of caregiving and recovery but also the perspective, resilience, and humor that sustain them. Their story underscores the importance of support, adaptation and cherishing life’s moments after serious illness.
