Susan Braun moves to V Foundation

Author(s):

The V Foundation for Cancer Research has just named as its new CEO Susan Braun, a name we know well here at CURE. Susan, a former publisher at CURE, will assume her position with the foundation in September and then, if history is any measure, we are sure to see more wonderful contributions to cancer research from the V Foundation. With a motto like "Don't give up, . . . don't ever give up," the foundation and Susan are well matched.The foundation is the legacy of famed "Jim" Valvano, nicknamed Jimmy V, head basketball coach at North Carolina State University for a number of years during which he won the 1983 NCAA Basketball Tournament against long odds. Known almost as well for his inspiring speeches, Valvano spoke at the 1993 ESPY awards when he was given the first Arthur Ashe Courage and Humanitarian Award. During the speech he announced the creation of the V Foundcation for Cancer Research. Valvano died of bone cancer only weeks after the award ceremony. The foundation has been run by family and friends and become known for supporting young investigators. Susan Braun has a long history of building foundations and comes from a position with Commonweal, a nonprofit health and environmental research institute in Bolinas, California.
