Balance Exercise Package for Patients With Cancer: Improve Stability With Tandem Standing

Fact checked by: Quincy Attobrah

The first Balance Exercise Package for patients with cancer features tandem standing to improve balance, reduce fall risk and support everyday movement.

We're kicking off the first edition of our Balance Exercise Package with oncology physical therapist Dr. Leslie Waltke. Throughout this series, she'll share simple exercises you can do at home to improve your balance, reduce your risk of falls and make everyday activities easier.

Why Balance Is So Important for Patients With Cancer

Balance is something we use every day, even if we don't think about it. Every step you take includes a moment when you're standing on one leg. When balance becomes more difficult, so do everyday activities like walking, getting in and out of the car, stepping onto a curb or climbing into the bathtub.

Keeping your balance strong can help you stay active, move more confidently and maintain your independence.

How to Do Tandem Standing

Try this exercise at home using a sturdy chair, countertop or wall for support if needed.

  • Stand with one foot directly in front of the other.
  • Hold the position for 30 to 60 seconds.
  • Switch feet and repeat.
  • To make it more challenging, extend your arms and slowly rotate your upper body from side to side.

It's normal if one side feels easier than the other.

How Often Should You Practice?

Dr. Waltke recommends holding the position for 30 to 60 seconds before switching feet and repeating on the other side. If the exercise feels easy, practicing it once a week or a couple of times each month can help maintain your balance. If it's more challenging, try doing it three to five times a week until it becomes easier. And if you're unable to perform the exercise safely, talk with your doctor about whether seeing a physical therapist is right for you.
