 – also known as uterine cancer, beings in the endometrium – which is the inner lining of the uterus in a woman. Cancer cells in the endometrium can travel to the vagina or lungs. The uterus is the pear-shaped organ low in a woman’s belly that holds the baby when she is pregnant. Based on how the cells look, there are many kinds of endometrial cancer – and some are very rare.

 new bleeding, spotting, or other discharge from the vagina pain and/or lump in the area; or unintended weight loss. Endometrial (Uterine) cancer affects more than 640,000 plus women in the United States. Yet, there is not a standard screening test that determines the possibility or catches it. If you are experiencing bleeding between periods, abnormal or watery, or perhaps blood-tinged discharge from the vagina.

 – This treatment is designed for the abnormal bleeding of the uterus caused by a benign or non-cancerous tumor. It is not however a sufficient enough surgical procedure for a cancerous uterus that has grown into the deeper tissues of the uterus and will remain a problem unless other steps are taken.

 – the survival rate for a woman with uterine or endometrial cancer is 82% at the 5-year mark. There are many risk factors to consider so a regular pap smear or cervical cancer screening is recommended.

Many of the signs and symptoms mentioned above could be caused by other medical conditions. It is vital to always be evaluated by your medical physician and be evaluated regularly with a Pap test to ensure a healthy and long life free of the risk of a endometrial cancer diagnosis.

Cancer Brought Me to Sharon in Wonderland

Once your life has been impacted by the beast that we call cancer, I think it’s safe to say that you become hypervigilant about its signs and symptoms. The scary part is that for a large number of cancers, their symptoms don’t show up until it is in its late, more advanced stages. Cervical cancer is among those that can grow undetected, which is why screening is so vitally important for us ladies. Let’s take some time today to talk about 

, its symptoms, outlook, and treatment options.

What are the symptoms of stage 4 cervical cancer?

The symptoms of stage 4 cervical cancer can be difficult to differentiate from other diseases, so if you experience these symptoms, please see your gynecologist soon. The 

 gives us the following warning signs for cervical cancer (directly quoted):

Abnormal bleeding from the vagina after vaginal sex, another sign is bleeding that continues after menopause, spotting, and bleeding in between periods, having periods that are much longer or heavier bleeding than normal. Bleeding after using any douche product or following a pelvic exam by your doctor.

An additional warning sign would be an unusual vaginal discharge – it may also appear that the discharge contains some blood and occur at times that are following menopause or in between periods.

It is vital for women to know what is “normal” for their bodies and their cycles so that irregularities can be identified quickly.

It is not uncommon to have many forms of cervical cancer take years to grow from the stage of the abnormal cell to becoming actual cancer, so getting in regularly for your annual pap smears can be lifesaving.

What is the prognosis for stage 4 cervical cancer?

When caught early, the 5-year survival rate for cervical cancer is quite high – 92%! Sadly, as the disease spreads and metastasizes to distant parts of the body, the survival rate drops to only 17%. I know I sound like a broken record, but this is why screening is so important. No, its not a fun day, but go see your gynecologist – it could save your life!

Stage IV cervical cancer is further broken down into stage IVA and stage IVB. Stage IVA is treated similarly to stages IIB and III, with chemoradiation in an attempt to cure the disease. Stage IVB, however, is largely considered incurable, and the aim of treatment is to easy pain and suffering and to prolong the patient’s life. Radiation and chemotherapy are typically used to slow the growth of the disease, and other drugs, such as Keytruda, an immunotherapy agent, may be employed as well. Knowing that 70% of cervical cancers are known to be caused by the Human pappilomavirus (HPV), it is comforting to me to know that young people now have the opportunity to be vaccinated against this disease. Please note that although I am personally pro-vaccines, I do not speak for

Stage 4 Cervical Cancer

 when Steve Martin says that ladies have it easier – after all – we have fewer prostate problems? Well, he was right on the prostate issue, obviously; however, we ladies do have our own specific problems in the form of breast (yes, men do get breast cancer too), ovarian, endometrial, and cervical cancers. What I think is perhaps the scariest part of these “lady cancers” is their propensity to be silent.

The nursing mother that feels a lump, but thinks is just a swollen milk duct.

The woman that has always had heavy or irregular periods, so doesn’t recognize the abnormal bleeding.

One of these terrifying cancers, cervical cancer, is very sneaky. With symptoms not varying tremendously from stage 1 to stage 4, it is easy to see how it can progress virtually unnoticed.

In its early stages, cervical cancer can be difficult for patients to identify, but its symptoms can include:

Abnormal vaginal bleeding – such as bleeding between periods or after intercourse

The best way to catch cervical cancer in its earliest stages is to have regular Pap tests done by your physician. Pap tests look for abnormal cells, sometimes referred to as dypslasias. Many physicians will also order an HPV test, which will look for the presence of that virus in the cervical cells. For more information about HPV and cervical cancer, take a look at our article “

There are two main types of cervical cancer: squamous cell carcinoma (which accounts for roughly 90% of all cervical cancers) and adenocarcinoma. The main difference in these cancers is where the dysplasia originates – on the outside of the cervix where it meets the vagina, the exocervix (squamous cell carcinoma), or on the inside, canal-like portion of the cervix known as the endocervix (adenocarcinoma). Mixed cell cervical cancer is possible, but far less common that the single cell types.

As with other cancers, the survival rate of cervical cancer is highest when it is caught early, with the stage 4 cervical cancer survival rate being as low as 15%. Five-year survival rates for all cervical cancer stages are seen below:

In stage 4A cervical cancer, the disease has spread to the bladder or rectum, but has not yet infiltrated the lymph nodes or organs in other areas of the body; stage 4B cervical cancer sees the disease in other areas of the body besides the pelvis.

Treatment options for cervical cancer vary by stage, as is the case with most cancers. The stages of cervical cancer indicate how deep the cancer has reached in the cervix, pelvic cavity, beyond the pelvic organs, and to the lymph nodes. Keep in mind these are typical treatments, and actual treatments may vary based on a variety of factors.

Stage 0 – In the earliest stage of all cervical cancers, the cancer is found only on the surface of the cervix, and has not yet invaded any deeper tissues. This allows doctors to simply remove the cancerous cells via cryosurgery, laser surgery, or simple hysterectomy (for more aggressive cancers).

Stage 1 – These cancers need to be treated more aggressively, as they are moving deeper into the cervical tissue. The main choice in treatment at this stage is whether the woman wants to maintain her fertility. If fertility is not an issue, doctors can proceed with hysterectomy, and possibly external beam radiation. If the woman wants to maintain her fertility, the doctors can opt for a cone biopsy. If no cancerous cells are seen at the edges of the biopsy, it is deemed to have clean margins, and this can be followed by careful monitoring. Another procedure, called trachelectomy can be ordered. This procedure removes the cervix and upper part of the vagina, but preserves fertility.

Stage 2 – Stage 2A treatment is similar to treatments in late stage 1 and can vary by the wish to maintain fertility. Sadly, any progression beyond stage 2A often requires hysterectomy, chemotherapy, and radiation.

Recurrent cervical cancer – when cervical cancer comes back, treatment will depend on where the recurrence shows up. When it occurs in the pelvis, surgery may be useful to remove tumors. Chemo and radiation may be ordered; however, their use is to prolong/improve quality of life; sadly they aren’t thought to be curative at this point. Dennis R. Scribner, M.D., FACOG, FACS, clinical associate professor for the University of Arizona School of Medicine, Arizona Oncology, explains an important telltale sign of uterine cancer.

While there is no test for uterine cancer (such as a mammogram for breast cancer or a colonoscopy for colorectal cancer) vaginal bleeding is one of the first signs that a woman might have uterine cancer. so, Scribner suggests that women who are experiencing abnormal bleeding contact their health care providers.

While there is no test, such as a mamogram or colonoscopy, for uterine cancer, vaginal bleeding is a telltale sign of the disease.

Spotting the Signs of Uterine Cancer

Bladder Cancer: Overview

Bladder cancer is also known as urothelial carcinoma. Urothelial cells line the urinary tract, including the urethra, bladder, and ureters and renal pelvis in the kidneys. These urothelial or transitional cells are in contact with urine. Bladder cancer happens when those cells in the bladder start to grow out of control.

Smoking and being exposed to secondhand smoke increases the risk of developing bladder cancer. In addition, people exposed to occupational or environmental chemicals may have a higher risk of developing bladder cancer. White people are twice as likely to develop bladder cancer as are Black people or Hispanic people, and older age is another risk factor. Health history also matters, with chronic bladder inflammation, such as urinary tract infections or kidney stones, as well as a personal or family history of bladder cancer, associated with risk of the disease.

Many people are unaware of the common signs of bladder cancer, such as blood in the urine, known as hematuria. If blood in the urine can be seen, this is called gross hematuria. When a physician runs a urinalysis test as part of a routine checkup, tiny amounts of blood may be detected. This is microscopic hematuria. Any blood seen in the urine should be checked by a physician. Irritation when urinating, urgency and frequency are other warning signs. These signs may also be from other causes, such as a urinary tract infection, kidney stones or aging.

Bladder Cancer: Living with Cancer

Bladder cancer has a high rate of recurrence, which implies the need for regular surveillance with cystoscopy over the course of a patient’s lifetime. For some patients, the new normal after bladder removal surgery is adjusting to life with a urinary diversion. A patient should always feel comfortable talking with their health care team about any issues or questions. If the team can’t help, they can usually find someone who can.

Bladder Cancer: Types of Disease

Doctors usually describe and treat bladder cancer by how far it has grown into the bladder wall.

NMIBC (non-muscle invasive bladder cancer) is cancer that remains in the urothelial cells that line the bladder.

MIBC (muscle-invasive bladder cancer) is cancer that has grown into the deeper layers of bladder muscle.

If bladder cancer has spread to other parts of the body outside the urinary tract, it is advanced disease, or metastatic.

Types of bladder cancer include urothelial carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, adenocarcinoma, small cell carcinoma and sarcoma.

Urothelial carcinoma, the most common type of bladder cancer, is also known as transitional cell carcinoma. Transitional cell carcinoma begins in the part of the kidney, called the renal pelvis, where urine collects before moving to the bladder.

Squamous cell carcinoma comprises 1% to 2% of bladder cancers, according to the American Cancer Society. Most squamous cell carcinomas of the bladder are invasive.

Adenocarcinoma, which are also mostly invasive, occur in only 1% of bladder cancers.

Small cell carcinoma, which occurs in less than 1% of bladder cancers, start in the neuroendocrine cells. This subtype of the disease can grow quickly.
