Leadership of Impact: A Life Centered on Service and Healing
Key Takeaways
- Clinical trials activation responsibilities at a major cancer center translate operational rigor into earlier study starts and broader access to potentially life-extending investigational options.
- Ovarcome volunteer work includes event support and clinical trial navigation, aligning trial eligibility criteria with individual disease characteristics to reduce patient and caregiver decisional burden.
Kristin Johnson, MSN, RN, OCN, of MD Anderson Cancer Center, combines clinical trials work with volunteer advocacy for ovarian cancer patients and survivors of human trafficking.
Kristin Johnson's career and community service reflect a deep and unwavering commitment to compassion, advocacy and improving the lives of others. As a clinical trials activation specialist at MD Anderson Cancer Center, and previously a research nurse and nurse leader in gynecologic oncology, she has devoted her professional life to advancing cancer treatment through high-quality clinical research. Her work directly contributes to opening new clinical trials that provide patients with access to lifesaving and life-extending therapies. She brings a meticulous, patient-centered approach to trial activation and research implementation, always guided by the belief that timely access to clinical trials equals hope for patients and families.
Her impact extends well beyond her professional role. Since 2016, Johnson has volunteered with Ovarcome, a nonprofit supporting women with ovarian cancer, where she assists with major events and, more recently, serves as a clinical trials navigator, helping patients navigate ClinicalTrials.gov and match available trials to their disease characteristics. At a time when patients and caregivers are often overwhelmed, her guidance restores a sense of direction and possibility.
Johnson continues to be inspired by her mother, a 27-year ovarian cancer survivor whose experience inspired her to become an oncology nurse. The two volunteer with Ovarcome together, with her mother serving on the board.
Johnson's compassion is equally evident in her service to the broader community. She designed, launched and led the Youth Rescue Wardrobe Program at The Landing, a mission serving survivors of human trafficking. Recognizing that many youth arrived with only the clothing they were wearing, she built a system to provide personalized clothing, shoes, toiletries and school supplies. From 2020 to 2022, she supported 59 survivors, ages 12 to 20, offering dignity, warmth and stability during traumatic transitions. Her work communicated one powerful message: You deserve to be seen, valued and safe.
She continues to serve her community through active leadership at Sugar Mill Elementary, the Sugar Land Girls Softball Association, i9 Volleyball and Christ Church Sugar Land, while also holding multiple leadership roles in the Houston Chapter of the Oncology Nursing Society, including chapter president.
Across every role as a nurse, advocate, volunteer and leader, Johnson brings empathy, humility and unwavering service. She does her work quietly, without seeking recognition, yet the lives she has touched are immeasurable. Her contributions exemplify the heart of oncology nursing: expert care fueled by deep compassion.
