A Chat With Bonnie J. Addario

When first diagnosed with lung cancer, some doctors told Bonnie J. Addario that there was nothing that they could do for her. Now, 14 years later, she has spent over a decade helping others with the disease through her Bonnie J. Addario Lung Cancer Foundation.

In 2004, Bonnie J. Addario was diagnosed with stage 3b lung cancer, and was told by health care practitioners that there was nothing that they could do. But thankfully, Addario refused to accept that answer and ultimately found a multidisciplinary team at the University of California, San Francisco to treat her. Now she’s still here, nearly a decade and a half later.

After being diagnosed, Addario created the Bonnie J. Addario Lung Cancer Foundation, because she realized that many patients lack access to proper care, especially since the majority of patients are treated in the community setting, where they may not offer things like multidisciplinary care and genomic profiling. Since its inception in 2006, the foundation has raised millions of dollars to knock down those barriers to care. They also attend oncology meetings to emphasize to health care professionals the importance of staying up to date on the latest research and needs of patients with lung cancer.
