One Patient's Journey From Diagnosis to Exploring New Options

Michael Goldman walks through his melanoma diagnosis in 2023, which began with unusual visual disturbances that escalated to headaches and vomiting. Emergency imaging revealed 2 hemorrhaging brain tumors, leading to urgent surgical resection at an outside hospital. Medical oncologist James Smithy, MD, MHS, of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center joins Michael in reviewing the sequence of first-line treatments. Michael started on combination immunotherapy, which was stopped after elevated liver enzymes, followed by BRAF/MEK-targeted therapy that controlled the disease for approximately 1 year before progression in July 2024. Michael describes the emotional weight of the initial diagnosis, leaning on family and friends while doing what he could to stay healthy, and the conversations with his care team that led him to consider tumor-infiltrating lymphocyte (TIL) therapy as a next step. The episode highlights the importance of trust, communication, and support systems when navigating treatment decisions in advanced melanoma.
